This flute sounds as good as any wood flute. As a matter of fact TerryLee is using it in his next album "Kairos" and his brother John Two Hawks already beat him to it. Two Hawks used one of TerryLee's C-PVC flute on his latest album "Heal". We both use the C-PVC flutes in live concerts.

Voices From The Past

The flute has been around for about 3ooo years.

This one is from the style of about 200 years ago….

Oh, if only the wood could talk

But it can

Don’t you here the voice speaking

All it needs is some breath

and oh, what the voices

have to say

To teach us

and set our heart and mind at ease

Let the Voices

take you on your journey

For if you listen

the voice of Flute will

will find what you need

Oh, how the wood can talk

Life in A Flute

The flute, is a human connection. What I mean when I say that is, the flute has been found in every generation past and present. The flute has been found in caves in Europe that dated back 84,000 years.

It is so much more that just a musical instrument. It is a life and it has a voice which only needs a breath to come alive. It is also a voice for healing, and is very sacred. One of the oldest words in the world for "God" roughly translates into, "Wind through the end of a flute" and equates to "Breath of life" commonly known to different peoples across the World as the "Giver of life."

The American Indian people have used the flute as an instrument of meditation, medicine, and courting. Missionaries decided, it was immoral to court women with "God's instrument," and the ancient art almost died.

The American Indian Elders, past and present, have taught to honor the "Tree"; also know as, "Standing Person"; as it has sacrificed a part of itself for the life of the flute. A voice waiting for all people to hear. Not only has the tree transferred a part of its spirit, but the flute maker as well.

To the American Indian music is a great expression of spirit. They believe that it comes from a sacred place, from the "Giver of all life."

Music allows me to release my innermost feelings and emotions. I feel the "Great Mystery," when I play. I believe He smiles upon me with truth, so that I may share it with you. When I am playing, I am placed in the palm of the Creator, and within the womb of our "Mother Earth." The credits for my gifts are not mine, but the "Father's". I give thanks for them all. We are privileged by the grace of the "Great Spirit."

I play with complete spiritual admiration and honor for, and to sooth the heartbeat of our "Mother Earth."

The flute, is believed to have healing effects, and the ability to communicate with spirit animals, such as the wolf, hawk, and eagle. I believe this to be true, and I hope that my music will help in some way to strengthen your connection with "Mother Earth," the spirits, and your spirit within.

Some Flute History and Woods

There are those who think all American Indian flutes were made from Cedar in the ages gone by. This is not the truth, for you see flutes were made from the materials which were available to the American Indian Nations. Since there were no modern electric tools all the materials were of soft woods or hollow like the wild reed or bamboo.

Cedar is a Sacred wood to the American Indians and was used were it was available to make the flute and also used for other purposes. The different woods, the diameter, length, and thickness of the wood will affect the tone and voice which will come from the flute. The flutes made from bamboo and/or wild reed, tend to be of a higher pitch than the wood flutes do.

History credits the Cherokee Indians as creators of the bamboo or wild reed flute. Actually the Creek should be given credit for their creation. The Cherokee did use the wild reed to create blow guns for hunting and in sport for training how to go out and hunt for small game. Since they used the wild reed, I am sure they also made flutes out of the material as they do today.

Today’s market for flutes, combined with today’s tools and knowledge, the American Indian flute is being made from all sorts of materials. The hard woods, soft woods, antler, commercial counter top materials, extruded plastics, PVC, and C-PVC pipe. All of these materials has broadened the range of the voices which come from the American Indian flute.

There is also another design of the American Indian flute which has evolved from the imaginations of the creators. The flute is a two welled instrument;  where the air hole is to blow into is the first small well (the air chamber), and the second long well is where  tones and voice is controlled by the placement of your fingers on the holes of the flute.

The new idea is creating a second tube or hollow area beside the single tube flute. Usually this second tube will not have any holes to change its tone and it acts as a drone when played. This creates a harmonizing second tone when you are playing and sounds like you have two flutes playing. Now this second tube has also had some holes put into it and this just expands on the ways the flute can be played. This kind of flute is for the very experience flute player. The sky is almost the limit on the flute design today and you can even find as many as 4 tubes or chambers being created using the American Indian knowledge on flute making.

Happy fluting!
