Story of the Tribute to
Medicine Wheel
In the late 1800's after
millions of buffalo were exterminated by poachers and the federal
government, tribal elders spent many extensive hours praying for their
return only to be told by government officials, that their efforts to
bring back the nearly extinct species were in vain. The buffalo are
gone, praying will not bring them back, they were told!
Today over 100 years later, the prayers of the elders, have been heard
and answered. The buffalo whose numbers had dwindled to less than 500 -
are back. American's bison population is not estimated at approximately
250,000.
The famous white buffalo, Medicine Wheel, that was born in May of 1996
on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, was tragically killed. The buffalo
was found by law-enforcement personnel wondering the streets at night
and shot to death. Medicine Wheel was considered a symbol of hope,
rebirth and unity for numerous Great Plains tribes and was predicted in
Lakota oral history.
