NEW DEAL

“HAVE I GOT A DEAL FOR YOU!” How many times in your life have you heard that statement or said that to someone? It seems to be a trait of human nature for us to try to get the better deal or upper hand in most arrangements.

When American Indians hear “HAVE I GOT A DEAL FOR YOU” it brings back stories of treaties---the deal was to trade their land for money, provisions, and reservation land. American Indians know that the land really doesn’t belong to people---it is our Mother. How can you sell your Mother?

In 1934 the Roosevelt administration presented Collier’s New Deal, which was supposed to extend to the Indian the fundamental rights of political liberty and local self-government and the opportunities of education and economic assistance that they require in order to attain a wholesome American life.

In 1948 the Truman administration put into effect the Fair Deal program. The Fair Deal policy to help the poor sought to recreate a better America with equal treatment for all citizens, including minorities. In the eyes of the federal government the American Indians had no choice but to become a part of the general populace and to share the same rights and privileges as other citizens. And we all know how the Fair Deal went.

New deals and fair deals are still happening. For all of us. When can we treat each other as equals and with respect?

When is this country going to cut a fair deal for humans, not just humans but for all of life?
