Good Medicine
Tour
Gift for Living - Way of Life - Medicine Wheel - Circle of Being - The Inner Journey; These all can only touch the surface of the depths in meaning of the Medicine wheel.
It is difficult to convey what should be a way of life, but it is a greater difficulty still to graphically represent it. The teaching makes its own way into the lives of others to the degree of their receptivity and sincere desire for understanding. Our gift is found in 4 parts and without one piece, it is all broken and incomplete as many lives are today. The number 4 appears in all sacred teachings reaching back some 20,000 years or better. Man is a fourfold being: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual, but for many, the spirit is unexplored, unfortunately. The circle is the most geometric shape known to man. The circle is perfection within itself and it is the light. A circle is used by all people and we can all see each other in a circle. It is symbolic of the snake swallowing his own tail, an emblem of completion, for there is no leader except spirit then. The Circle is the Creator and the energy of all creation having completion.
EAST - We enter from the East, addressing the Sun for it is the light, our healing energy. It is the way of cooking our food and staying warm. The Sun's energy is given freely to us all each day. Tobacco is the first medicine given to us so it comes from the East. From the Sun we have fire to burn the Tobacco creating the smoke for the Creator to see. Through the smoke, Creator can see there is a prayer to be herd and answered. The Eagle is found here because he is a messenger and a healer. He will look at us to take away sickness. We rise to the East, raising hands for thanks and healing. This is where our prayers are seen and heard but we do not have clarity yet.
SOUTH - This is where we find the answers to our prayers. Cedar burning creates a whole atmosphere of positive energy, clear thoughts and answers are received through its aroma entering our senses. Our prayers from the East are being clarified. We offer Cedar here for its calming and cleansing properties. Cedar clears position of prayer. We may be in a position in which we need to look at ourselves. The Red Tail hawk, 'Red Eagle', is found here and he is also a messenger.
WEST - The direction or position we want to arrive at. This is where healing takes place. The West-East colors are chasing each other to make things balanced for the healing to work. Sage is fitting here for its ability to soothe and calm oneself. We find the Bear here because he can be playful but also can cause harm. He shows balance in these matters and makes good decisions in life. The Bear is a bringer of healing ways. Balance is not the blending of right-wrong, black-white; it is appropriate action consistent within circumstances. Each is used when there is a need to call on them or they have been called by some other means. This is where our attention to wake up to life, scare us into getting our act together, so the healing will have lasting effect.
NORTH - The physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual are all found here. White is pure, the Creator, cleansing, healing, and all sacredness. Sweet grass resides here for the soothing and calming of the smoking agent, as well as the White Buffalo - Calf Women, who brought the medicines. This is where joy, laughing, happiness, harmony, and peace of tears is reached.
Covering these 4 positions in order, then takes you to the Center. Joining together Heaven and Earth, when all positions are in balance. White, Blue, or Green can be found in the Center of all, the Creator.
The Wheel of Life is one way of representing a Universal Truth that is vital to each of us, in whatever culture we may find ourselves to have been born. The deeper purpose is to lead beyond the surface appearance into the realm of an inner experience of renewal and awakening.
