 Endless Flame

The story of this painting is about the Cherokee. Our Name is GWY (pronounced Tsalagi) but we call ourselves DhBOW (aniyunwiya, "the real people"). Our story is one of balance. This balance is between men and women, animals and plants, complementing each other's lives.
The story started in the southeastern United States, where the Cherokee's were the original hunters, and farmers. The US government looked at our land and thought that we were only using part of it and they wanted the riches our Mother held under her skin. In 1783 the politicians stated to seize our homelands. In 1838-39 the War Department forced my ancestors and 17,000 other Cherokee's to move to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) on the infamous TRAIL OF TEARS.
Today there are the Cherokee's of the East, West, and Northern who are all part of the approximate 200,000 people.
The original painting received two first place ribbons and was sold to a collector in Kansas City, Kansas.
Walk with the people in the picture and you will fill the cold and the loneliness as they were torn from their Mother land on the Trail Of Tears.
"The artist reason behind the title, "Endless Flame", is to represent how the Cherokee have survived and the tie with the Eternal Flame of Life."
You will also find the outline of a face in the flames of the father Sun. The face is looking above to the Eternal Father, "The Great Mystery". The Father of all images and the giver of the flesh of Life. "This face looking towards our Father has become a trade mark of the Whetstone art by his collectors always looking for Mother Earth to be looking to our Father. Terry has listened to his followers and will place Mother Earth looking toward our Father once and awhile to keep his followers off guard. You will also find a Broken Eagle Feather on the branch of the small tree. The artist will always place one broken Eagle Feather in his paintings if feathers are being painted in his art. This stared out to show the promises which are still being broken to the Indians and the non-Indian way of Life. The broken Eagle Feather has evolved in TerryLee's art to stand for the broken promises to all of the People of the world." I speak, "When these promises quit being broken, I will stop showing the broken Eagle Feather, (When we can become truly "One People").
Within the snow you can find a fallen staff which has been almost covered up by Mother Earth's blanket. This is to represent also that the Indian has faded some, but they have not left their native land. This means that there is still time for the Non-Indian world to learn from the Indian. For they do have a story to tell and lessons for us all to learn. All of which is part of the truth and we must listen if we are all to survive and save our Mother
